Nicos Papaloukas on show

at Kypriaki Gonia

NICOS’ Papaloukas new work will exhibited in Gallery Kypriaki Gonia, Larnaca, from today until January 29.

It will be opened by the President of the Rotary Club of Larnaca, Demetris Lefkaritis at 7.30 p.m.

Papaloukas was born at Bellapaix in 1969.

He studied graphic design and then painting at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Fine Arts (1998-2003).

He was awarded a first class degree and presented his work in group and individual exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Athens and in Nicosia.

In the artist’s own words: “Art surmises through the creation of forms, that which logic cannot grasp. It surmises a truth that exists beyond objects; or a truth that exists within objects and defines them.

"Through the creation of form, space gives dimensions to time, making it into a present, as a memory and as an expectation. It makes it present in a special and unique way, as it had never existed before. Art being a purely mental function points the way.

"We can exist in another way. The conjectured event is a piece of evidence. Art can teach us, whenever we come into communion with it. It stirs and enthrals us, whenever we partake of her through an artistic event like holy communion."

The critic Christodoulos Callinos has written about Papaloucas work: "The art of Papaloukas, art with poetic disposition, constructs a world of mystery, a conjectured utopia with anthropological content.

"At the centre of this utopian conjectured world, the stark and sparing human forms freed from soul-destroying and obsessive syndromes, purged of vanity and fear, are enjoying idealised expressions of human existence such as love, friendship, the feeling of tenderness and trust between people.

“While in the countenance of the conjectured characters there is an evident sense of completeness and internal balance… the artist, the landscape painter, surpasses the faithful depiction of the scenery and intervenes in social reality, transforming the noisy multitudinous and impersonal cities into aesthetically perfect ones, where birds return, trees grow, and children play without worry in tree-covered parks.

"Brooks, ponds and jetties complete this picturesqueness and sensibility of the scenery."

Group show

at Opus

OPUS 39 Gallery has a group exhibition of paintings and ceramics starting on January 14 and closing on February 10.

The exhibition will include works by Asproftas, Dikaios, Telemachos Kanthos, Tassos Stephanides, Photos Hadjisoteriou and other very well known artists.

Also be on sale will be engravings by Telemachos Kanthos, the album of six giclee prints of Adamantios Diamantis, the album of Christos Christou and a small album of engravings and poems by Alecos Fassianos.

Olga

at Gloria’s

Olga Spanou’s exhibition at Gloria’s coincided with the celebration of Gloria’s Christmas tree, an occasion when art works were given after a lucky dip of small paintings and drawings from the year’s exhibitions hung on a "minimal" Christmas tree.

A joyous occasion, indeed, but totally upstaged by Olga’s new work.

A tremendous feeling of warm and strong emotions packed the walls. Superbly abstract works in which the canvases frames followed their own shapes.

Areas of Hessian were used in conjunction with paint.

Angles were re-shaped. Super work, indeed.
