The Pharos Trust is 10 and time to celebrate. It says it’s going to electrify the Power House for three weeks with a major exhibition with 40 artists from all over the world, and a fantastic variety of daily activities such as concerts, world premiers, lectures, dance and workshops.

"The renowned Brazilian artist, Antonio Manuel, will be creating a large site specific installation AND MUCH MORE", said the blurb. It was ready on time. And it is true. MAGNIFICENT. I went twice last Friday. In the morning I was stunned by Manuel’s installation which, I hope will find a permanent home after the show. It’s as if a war has found peace.

At that time you could hear thunder from another installation (turned off, of course, during the evening’s beautiful guitar recital by Vasilios Avraam ), and for a moment I thought that perhaps rain had arrived in parched Nicosia. I wallowed in lots of what one could call post Polockian work and caught up once again with some brilliant Armenian paintings some which Garo Keheyan had brought to Cyprus a few years back.

That day (a Friday) Joanna Jones (remember her at the Melina?) was preparing for Saturday’s "Music & Painting: Amplication/ Moving in Detail" a performance, with her using a video camera and interacting with one of her paintings to a ‘visual score’ with a live improvised performance by cellist Rohan de Saram, the contemporary Greek composer and pianist Antonis Anissegos and principal timpanist Nicolas Papageorgiou.

Tonight, Friday, October 24 there will be music too. Cello and piano by Alexander Chaushian and Elizaveta Kopelman. The recital will include the premiere of Constantin Papageorgiou’s new work. Tomorrow evening there’s Dance/Music LOOKING GOOD direction/choreography by Arianna Eonomou.

You can find full programme information for The Pharos Trust’s superb exhibition at the Power House’s book and gift shop. A remarkable event indeed.

Pharos = Ten continues until November 9 at the Power House.

Prolongations of Red

Ermione Zachariadou, Alpha Gallery

This is a very strong exhibition by Ermione, with extremely well painted images. The subjects can be very moving with personal themes.

The application of paint is very adventurous with highly imaginative colour, suiting the themes with great sensitivity.

The work is very free and pigmentally liberating. Sometimes the edge of the canvas has an extension attached to the picture which pictorially always adjusts to the main image.

Very intelligent aesthetically. The extremely well painted and always under control figures make it clear that Ermione is also outstanding at drawing. Likenesses are preserved. The subjects "belong" to the sitter. Pigment reigns. The exhibition continues until tomorrow, Saturday (October 25).
