Norman Kenyon was so impressed by Jackie Sanderson’s work for Open Studios that he kindly sends this information
to the Arts page
He is astonished at the level and skill and patience required to produce her tapestries, especially the large ones that
take months to complete.
Jackie Sanderson is an artist who retired to Paphos in 1990. She added tapestry to her many other art forms after visiting
a tapestry workshop and gallery in Orkney in 1990.
She was inspired by the sheer scale of the work and the range of bright colours used in the tapestry on display. The resident
artist taught weaving and Jackie received some of her foundation notes on looma, bobbins, materials, etc. She has practiced
tapestry skills on small looms of about 0.5 metres until sufficiently confident to try a full-scale loom product. Her first
attempt was the Knossos Dolphin. This confirmed a talent in tapestry. She has experimented with various ideas in a subsequent
self-teaching period stretching over seven years. Jackie has produced a further ten tapestries, some as big as 1.5 x 1.2 metres,
mainly on a Greek mythology theme.
Her tapestries were well admired at her workshop in Open Studios this month. The clear favourites were Poseidon and her
triptych, Orpheus’s Journey to the underworld. These, like most of her tapestries are ‘drawn’ from her own
The final sketch for each tapestry is scaled up as the cartoon and secured immediately behind the warped-up loom. Another
cartoon showing the wool colours required in each part of the tapestry stands beside the loom for reference.
Jackie welcomes commissions for wall-hanging tapestries up to 1.9 metres in height.

Constantinos Ptochopoulos Gallery K
Born in 1979 Constantinos grew up in an artistic environment, being the son of a painter, Petros Ptochopoulos. He studied
art at the Aristotelion University of Salonica. He now lives and works in Larnaca and has take part in 9 group exhibitions
in Greece and Cyprus, plus one solo show.
The artist is inspired by the daily life in his own way, allowing his imagination to find solutions and induce the interest
of the spectator in his own particular way; guiding him towards the art trends of our time. Evidently influenced by the abstract
expressionism where any realistic trace is absent, his painting is bold, full of passion and quite personal. He explores light
with strong colours and brushstrokes adding pulsating liveliness to his expressionist work. He creates his own world, offering
colour and hope to our daily lives.
Christakis Polydorou Apocalypse Gallery
Polydorou creates his own visual narratives, often using couples on or holding bicycles. This gives him the opportunity
to produce excellent figurative work, imaginative compositions and subtle colour variations.
Dawn Luing Marzano
Figurative paintings applied with confidence and a wonderful calmness. Extremely reasonable prices for such excellent work.
Could be better lighting in the restaurant spaces but it’s a truly excellent show. Sensibly, the exhibition carries
on for a few weeks.
The wonderful Anna Maria Maioline exhibition continues at The Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art.
I hear Doros Heracleous has an exhibition later in the month (November 13, in fact) and that Martyn Meason will exhibit
at Gallery Argo after the Barbara Georgiou exhibition. All very, very promisng.
